    Philips is extending the product portfolio with the latest development of the high capacity DVD-ROM drive. DVD offers all the capacity needed for the next era of multimedia applications.

    Powered with the latest technology both in digital signal processing and mechanical transmission techniques, this drive offers extraordinary performance and reliability

    Versatility in playing media
    The achieved DVD standard adds a new high capacity branch to the multi member CD family of media. The single sided single layer version of the DVD-ROM disc with a capacity of 4700 MB offers already seven times the capacity of a normal CD-ROM. For the dual layer dual sided version disc offers a total capacity of 17 GB of storage. The strength of the Philips drive is that is also replays the existing media as already widely accepted by CD-ROM drives.

    A boost in data transfer rate
    Newly advanced digital circuit for data decoding and bit detection have lead to impressively high data transfer rates for DVD-ROM drives. Data rates which are required by the upcoming new wave of high capacity high bandwidth demanding multimedia applications. The DRD5000 drive boosts a 1.6 MB/s sustained data rate in the DVD mode while offering 1.2 MB/s (8x) in the CD-ROM mode.

    Access times
    The huge capacity of online data requires also very short seek and access times to have a balanced system performance. The DRD5000 is equipped with a novel technique for accessing data areas on the disc. This results in a average access time on a DVD disc of 140 ms access performance over more than 1.5 GB of data. This capability yields unique results on access performance in large video or graphics sequences.

    Technology
    The DRD5000 is equipped with novel techniques on data decoding technology, offering a unique single chip combining DVD and CD data decoding in one. This offers besides a compact and cost effective solution also higher and more reliable performance. A specially designed brushless motor for disc rotation contributes to a secure tolerance budget avoiding additional disc tilt controls. For the pickup movement also a brushless motor ensures repetitive repositioning accuracy during seeks operations.
