PROBLEM TO SOLVE: Allow Macs and PCs to send and receive UNIX mail (SMTP) in a location where a mail system has not been implemented.
DEPENDENCIES/ASSUMPTIONS: It is assumed that you have PCs or Macs and an Indy on the same Ethernet network and that you want to use UNIX mail (SMTP) with the Indy as the mail server. The Indy could be used a mail gateway to the Internet as well (not covered here).
PC:
* OS TYPE/REV
Windows 3.1, DOS 6.x Ethernet network adapter card.
* MAIL/NETWORK SUBSYSTEM
NetManage - Chameleon/NFS (provides WinSock.dll,) or SunSoft - PC-NFS Pro (provides WinSock.dll), or Helios - PC-Share (provides WinSock.dll), Z-Code Z-Mail, or QualComm - Eudora for Windows and third party WinSock.dll.
MAC:
* OS TYPE/REV MacOS 6.x or 7.x
* NETWORK SUBSYSTEM
MacTCP 2.xx Built-in Ethernet or Ethernet card.
* MAIL
QualComm - Eudora, Z-Code Z-Mail, or InterCon - TCP/ConnectII.
INDY:
* OS TYPE/REV IRIX 5.x
* MAIL Z-Mail (MediaMail). SendMail server configuration, POP server configuration.
STEPS:
INDY:
* Create users on the Indy for every Mac and PC user.
* Configure sendmail to enable the SMTP/POP server (see creating a POP server).
* Configure the Indy as yellow pages master (/etc/chkconfig yp on).
PC CLIENTS:
* Configure network adapter card and validate the functionality of the network drivers. Installing Chameleon/NFS or PC-NFS Pro will do this for commonly used network cards.
* Install the software and provide host names, IP addresses and other network parameters.
* If you already have a TCP/IP subsystem working and a WinSock.dll library you can use Eudora for Windows.
* Provide the mail package with the mail server host name (the Indy) and your user name on the mail server.
MAC CLIENTS:
* Configure MacTCP with the appropiate IP number, select EtherNet as the active TCP/IP subsystem (LocalTalk routing is addressed separately).
* Add known host names to the HOSTS file in the System Folder.
* Give the Mac a name by using the Sharing Setup control panel.
* Install Eudora or TCP/ConnectII and provide the name of the mail host, your mail user name and password.
COMMENTS: These products allow a Mac or a PC to access the Indy as a mail server. Once the TCP/IP software is running connecting to the mail server is very easy. Network adapter cards on the PC are a major issue. Some cards require considerable manual configuration of the software in order to make them work.
