a:\ndis2\readme.txt 30-JUL-1997 This README file is for the NDIS2 DOS and NDIS2 OS/2 device drivers for Digital's Fast EtherWORKS 10/100 PCI adapter. Supported adapters: DE500 Device drivers: DE500.DOS and DE500.OS2 These device drivers comply with the NDIS 2.0.1 specification. The DE500 adapter and the NDIS2 drivers meet the networking needs of any Network Operation System (NOS) which adheres to the NDIS 2.0.1 specification. This file contains information on the following topics: 1. PROTOCOL.INI parameters 2. PATHWORKS V4.1 installation 3. PATHWORKS V5.0 installation 4. IBM OS/2 2.1 + LAN Server 3.X installation 5. IBM OS/2 WARP Connect V3.0 Installation 6. IBM OS/2 Server V4.0 Installation 7. IBM OS/2 Workstation V4.0 Installation 8. Microsoft LAN Manager 2.X installation (DOS and OS/2) For information on installing the NDIS2 DOS driver with Windows for Workgroups, see the readme.txt in the WFW directory of this diskette. *************************** * PROTOCOL.INI PARAMETERS * *************************** Mandatory Parameters: DRIVERNAME (range = DE500$, DE500_1$-DE500_3$; no default) This parameter must be DE500$ when only one DE500 adapter is installed. DE500_1$ is required for the second adapter. Optional Parameters: MEDIA (range = 0 - 4; default = 0) MEDIA = 0 : AUTO-DETECT 1 : HALF DUPLEX /10 Mb 2 : HALF DUPLEX /100 Mb 3 : FULL DUPLEX /10 Mb 4 : FULL DUPLEX /100 Mb This Parameter can be used to tell the DE500 adapter what speed (10/100) and what mode (full duplex/half duplex) the network is operating at. Setting the parameter equal to 0 will enable the adapter's auto-detect algorithm, allowing the adapter to automatically determine the speed of the network. Setting the parameter to other values (1 - 4), will set the adapter to the speed desired AND disable the auto-detect algorithm. NWAY (range = 0 - 1; default = 1) This parameter will disable/off the adapter's NWAY function if it is set as 0. STORE_N_FORWARD (range = 0 - 1; default = 1) This parameter determines whether the adapter will be set to store and forward mode. If it is disabled, the adapter will set the threshold to a default value or a value set through the use of TX_THRESHOLD keyword. TX_THRESHOLD (range = 0 - 4; default = 0) TX_THRESHOLD 0 1 2 3 4 SPEED --------- ------------------------------------------------- 10 Mb 72 96 128 160 STORE AND FORWARD --------- ------------------------------------------------- 100 Mb 128 256 512 1024 STORE AND FORWARD This parameter sets the transmit threshold to the specified value, if the STORE_N_FORWARD mode is disabled. TX_BUFFERS (range = 4 - 8; default = 4) The number of transmit buffers allocated by the adapter. RX_BUFFERS (range = 16 - 20; default = 16) The number of receive buffers allocated by the adapter. PCI_CARD (range = 1 - 10; default = 1) This parameter specifies which instance of the DE500 adapter to use. For example, setting to 3 will cause the driver to use the 3rd DE500 card that the BIOS finds independent of which PCI Bus it is on. NETADDRESS (default =n/a) This parameter overrides the address stored in the on-board Ethernet Address ROM. For example: NetAddress = "08-00-2b-E1-07-8D" CAPTURE_EFFECT (range = 0,1; default = 0) Setting this parameter to one enables the resolution of the capture effect on the network. FLAGS (range = 0,1; default = 0) This parameter is used to modify operation of the driver for particular stack or application implementations. Each bit within this value may have a meaning. Currently only bit 0 is defined. Bit 0 0 = NETADDRESS parameter changes the current station address ONLY in the service-specific table (default). This adheres to the NDIS2 specification. 1 = NETADDRESS parameter cahnges the current and permanent station addresses in the service- specific table. This does not adhere to the NDIS2 specification. BURST_SIZE (range 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32; default = 8) This parameter limits the adapter DMA burst size to the specified longwords. ****************************** * PATHWORKS 4.1 INSTALLATION * ****************************** Manual Installation ------------------- If PATHWORKS is already installed and configured and you do not wish to use the PATHWORKS installation program, perform the following steps manually to install the NDIS2 driver: 1. Copy the DE500.DOS file from the driver installation diskette (A:\NDIS2\DOS\DE500.DOS) to the C:\DECNET directory. 2. Add the following line to CONFIG.SYS to load the driver: DEVICE = C:\DECNET\DE500.DOS 3. ADD the following to the end of the existing PROTOCOL.INI file located in the DECNET directory. [DE500] DRIVERNAME=DE500$ 4. Modify the [DATALINK] and [IPX4MAC] sections in PROTOCOL.INI to change the value of the keyword BINDINGS = driverlabel to BINDINGS = DE500.DOS Automatic Installation Using the PATHWORKS Client Setup Diskettes ----------------------------------------------------------------- Insert the PATHWORKS Client Setup diskette 1 of 2 in the floppy disk drive. Run NETSETUP from that drive and follow the instructions until you reach the window labeled: Select the network adapter type: o Select "Ethernet" and press ENTER key. Select the Ethernet adapter: o Select "Other NDIS" and press ENTER key. Enter full DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME for NDIS driver: o Type A:\NDIS2\DOS\DE500.DOS and press ENTER. Enter full DRIVE:\PATH\ for the PROTOCOL.INI stub: o Type A:\NDIS2\DOS\ and press ENTER. After you have performed these steps, PATHWORKS will copy the corresponding files from the driver diskette to the directory. Example of CONFIG.SYS and PROTOCOL.INI for PATHWORKS 4.1 ---------------------------------------------------------- ----- CONFIG.SYS ----- DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 3072 RAM FRAME=E000 DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\DECNET\laddrv.sys /D:4 DEVICE=C:\DECNET\PROTMAN.SYS /I:C:\DECNET DEVICE=C:\DECNET\DE500.DOS FILES=30 Buffers=40 STACKS=9,256 SHELL = C:\COMMAND.com /P /E:1024 lastdrive=z ----- PROTOCOL.INI ----- [protocol manager] DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$ BINDINGS = DE500_NIF [DE500_NIF] DriverName = DE500$ [DATALINK] DRIVERNAME = DLL$MAC LG_BUFFERS = 16 SM_BUFFERS = 6 OUTSTANDING = 32 HEURISTICS = 0 BINDINGS = DE500_NIF ******************************* * PATHWORKS V5.1 INSTALLATION * ******************************* Automatic Installation Using the PATHWORKS Client Setup ------------------------------------------------------- Insert the PATHWORKS Client Setup diskette 17 in your floppy drive.
