As an user you have to be aware that unlike most commercial drivers which comes as default with the card,on a floppy or in recent times on a CD-ROM , A Linux application or software or device driver whatever you may choose to call them, for the Sound Card is not permanent.one of the reasons which makes documentation difficult to write and maintain. The commercial Drivers which came as default with card may last the lifetime of the card, by lifetime i mean the time it spends in your box, of-course you may change the card every six weeks .May all your trouble be little one's!.Sometimes the commercial drivers change with the card also getting changed in the process, whew! no, don't read between the lines they must surely have a compelling reason behind this ;-).
But ALSA, if i may borrow an euphemism is 24/7 ,sometimes every hour on the hour i.e. it is constantly updated, tweaked and fixed for bugs if necessary.
So with this in view, as a matter of convention, only this page is updated for every minor release, tweak and bug fix but the entire HOWTO will be updated and changes made three or four times during version of the driver. For example say ALSA is currently in 0.5.0 version so this document will have two more revisions till version 0.6.0 starting with version 1.5 of this document
ALSA version 0.5.9d. These are changes, tweaks and bug fixes since ALSA version 0.5.9 which was the last version. Current version is 0.5.9d as you might have guessed from the title.
