FvwmCDEmv1.0b README

Well...Here we go again.

This update contains some new icons (the NeXT-like icons from Kiwi's AfterStep
page), and some new ideas.

NOTICE: You MUST have fvwmCDEmulator v1.0a, otherwise, the buttonbar won't
work! You'll get a whole bunch of additional icons you might never use though,
sorry...

CHANGES:

1. This update reckons with the release of fvwm2.0.45 beta, and but does not
incorporate any of the new features - in other words, this .fvwm2rc is
completely compatible with the new beta.

2. This update reckons with the release of KDE, and utilizes some of its "alpha"
apps, such as "kfm".

NOTE: I have retired Moxfm from personal use, and an update of the .xfmrc is NOT
included. If and when the author of Moxfm updates the interface to reflect
"modern" 3d icons in the title bar, and fixes a few other inconsistancies, I
might consider using it again. I use FileRunner exclusively, but am looking
forward to the beta release of the KDE "kfm", below.

NOTE: We await the official "beta" release of KDE at the end of February, '97,
and hope that its apps still run without the use of the KDE window manager.
"Kpanel", may well replace the fvwmbuttonbar "front panel" in this
configuration, as it will support drag and drop.

3. This update includes the use of "xmailbox" in the buttonbar/Front Panel.
I've include icons based on both "NeXT", and "CDE". If anybody can figure out
how to center the "xnomail/xmail" icon better, let me know...

4. The user is invited to keep the old "CDE" icon scheme in the ButtonBar. I
however, have replaced them with the NeXT-alike icons, as they are IMHO, nicer
looking, and abundant. The trick however, was to distribute them in a manner
which gives the "Front Panel" a sense of balance, like the original CDE icons
did. I think I've accomplished this. The icons is this update are the ones I currently use -
if you wish to have the entire collection, they can be obtained from:

http://www.iis.ee.ethz.ch/~kiwi/AfterStep/Icons/

I began my "love affair" with this icon set during my use of the AfterStep
window manager, which I've basically abandoned because of its use of fvwm 1.0
code, which is slow. Besides, I've always liked the mwm/fvwm windows much
better...

5. The menus are more consistant, and incorporate full size icons with little
or no text. It works out well, as you will see, and makes for a very pleasant
looking desktop.

THIS UPDATE CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING:

1. An updated .Xdefaults file. I own the Motif libs now, and have also been
fooling around with mwm (ugh!). The .Xdefaults file includes some mwm settings
if you like the damn thing.

2. An updated .fvwm2rc file based on fvwm2.0.43

3. The new icons - NOT the complete set, but those used by the above .fvwm2rc.
If you want to use these as "iconified" icons, use a text editor, and change
the word "none" (transparent color), to #aeb2c3. I'm currently working on
these for myself...:) Note that this is the "reduced color" set, if you get the
entire collection, it contains both full and reduced color. Also, I've hacked
a few of them to look more "NeXT" like. The "xnomail/xmail icons should go wherever to you keep your xmailbox/asmail/whatever icons at, and be renamed accordingly.

I recommend:

1. The KDE "suite", such as it stands. Hint: Kdehelp is an EXCELLENT manpage
reader!

2. FileRunner - The only way to fly...

3. Motif & Applix, if you can afford them...

4. Mxterm - A Motif-compliant xterm.

5. Xmtoolbar - If you absolutely MUST have a "Wharf" - acts pretty much the
same, but big...about a 2M executable.

6. Wabi - If you absolutely need Windoze for something (like WinVN!)

INSTALLATION: Basically, copy the icons to where ever you keep yours, and
adjust the pixmap path in the .fvwm2rc accordingly.

system.fvwm2rc = ~/.fvwm2rc
Xdefaults = ~/.Xdefaults
